Winter in Athens or Δεν κάνει κρύο

31st of January – one of the coldest days I`ve seen in Athens so far.

It`s super windy and I even saw some small, tiny white flies little by little dancing down from the sky (I suspect it to be snow). The temperature outside in Neos Kosmos is about -1 – +1. People from Latvia would laugh (it was -27 there today and it`s not the limit). Scandinavians would politely smile (cos this temperature is normal there for 5 month a year). Russians would probably find Athens now as a warm tourist destination and Germans would secretly giggle (they giggle about Greece lately anyways) 🙂 .

I made these comparisons for you in order to understand how “not winter” this weather is for me and for many others. But what I found funny today, is that Greeks seem to be getting scared!!! 🙂 They took out the warmest clothes they have: furs, jackets, huge woolen hats, long scarfs that they wrap around their necks like anacondas, hoods are pulled down and the face expressions say something like: “Damn, it`s f***ing freeeezing!” or “I`m gonna die how cold it is!!” :)))) It looks to me that the Greek facial skin is getting tortured by these weather conditions and I seriously start to feel sorry, want to give everybody a hug and tell magical stories about how I was going to school with 3 meters of snow and -20 outside when I was little. 🙂

Nevertheless I still hope this to be the coldest I`ll ever see Athens, cos I came here for sun and warmth, not sweaters and winter 😉

To cheer up all the freezing people in Greece and abroad, here you go a very sunny, warm song from Locomondo – Δεν κάνει κρύο (Eng. “It`s not cold).

English

it’s not cold

It’s not cold in Greece
it was never cold
come tonight so you can feel
like you’ve never felt before

do you want to go on a trip
to a magical country
where everybody has fun
as if they were experts

If you laugh you’ve lost
say the regulations
and if you dare to dace
you become threatened by exclusion

it’s not cold in Greece
it was never cold
come tonight so you can feel
like you’ve never felt before

from the abyss of sorrow
to the meadows of joy
is a small door
who’s knob you hold

this night needs party
it needs sweat and shouts
not a trendy catwalk
and disasterous culture

It’s not cold in Greece
it was never cold
come tonight so you can feel
like you’ve never felt before

Become the sun’s child
and the fire’s laugh
become the world’s strength
so you can break chains

sweaty (girl) hug me
love is everywhere
and if you’d like, kiss me
so I can see the sky’s stars

It’s not cold in Greece
it was never cold
come tonight so you can feel
like you’ve never felt before

  1. For Greek people is cold, no suprize for me actually.
Depending on the temperature ranges you ve been used to , I guess.
For example, over 30’C are chilly in the summer for us, while in other European countries, they have overheating problems!
(What will they do when it ll hit 46’C, its another story).

I remember 3-4 years ago, I left Athens at the start of September, while it still had 36’C. Next day, in Salzburg, at 6:30 in the morning, the temperature was 6’C.

    • Yea I totally agree 🙂 and that`s why I like to watch differences between what people (including me) are used to in different places!
I can`t wait for weather to be back at least +20 and sunny!! Everything else stops to matter:)

      • Me too. I freezed today :S I was shaking badly while waiting for the bus and I was overdressed to … prevent the cold!

        Why can’t we just have 20’C ? Not 0, neither 45’C!

      • Xexexe :))) I know!!! but it`s gonna get warm now, so I hope for summer weather soon :)))
